Hidalgo County Commissioners' Court/Drainage District Board of Directors met in session on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 and considered agendas that included the following highlights: 

COUNTY JUDGE APPOINTS AT LARGE MEMBERS TO SOUTH TEXAS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Members of Commissioners' Court and South Texas Independent School District Board Members and Representatives

County Judge Ramon Garcia appointed four At Large Members to the South Texas Independent School District Board of Directors. Garcia reappointed Sylvia Garza of Edinburg and Yolanda Cuellar of Progresso Lakes, who each served as members for the past four years. Garcia also appointed Ramon Montalvo of Weslaco, who owns Montalvo Insurance Agency, and Dr. Richard Flemming of Mission, a family physician and ER doctor at Mission Regional Medical Center. A fifth position remains to be filled after Cain Caceres resigned; Garcia will appoint the remaining position during next week's meeting. 


PROCLAMATION FOR WORLD DIABETES DAY

Commissioners' Court approved a proclamation declaring November 14, 2012 as World Diabetes Day. In honor of the proclamation, HCHHS will be hosting the 3rd annual Hidalgo County Employee Diabetes Day event at the Health Department central office on November 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. HCHHS with the support of Sam's Club, will be offering FREE glucose checks, a limited amount of Hemoglobin A1C tests, Body Mass Index Analysis, blood pressure screenings, plus flu and pertussis vaccinations. They will also be providing information on living healthy with diabetes and diabetes prevention. County officials encourage all Hidalgo County residents to observe World Diabetes Day by incorporating diabetes awareness, prevention and detection practices into daily family activities.

DELINQUENT TAX COLLECTION REPORT PRESENTED

Representatives from Perdue, Brandon, Fielder, Collins & Mott, LLP in Association with the Law Offices of John David Franz presented their final report on the Delinquent Tax Collections, for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, to Commissioners' Court. During this time the staff contacted Hidalgo County residents through phone and mail, resulting in payment agreements for more than $1 million in delinquent taxes. More than 3,000 claims were filed and pursued through litigation resulting in more than $10.6 million in base taxes. Overall the firm was able to collect more than $12.2 million worth of delinquent taxes for Hidalgo County. 


2012 GENERAL ELECTION CANVASSING

Commissioners' Court members and the Elections Department will conduct the canvassing of votes from the 2012 General Election on Wednesday November 14, 2012 at 9 a.m.

COURT MOVES OPEN FORUM TO FRONT OF MEETING

Commissioners' Court approved moving the "Open Forum" portion of Commissioners' Court meetings to the beginning of the agenda to allow for public input and participation in local government. Residents interested in speaking before the Court on matters related to County government can sign up with the Commissioners' Court administrator prior to the beginning of each meeting, and are allowed 5 minutes to address the Court.


The next meeting of Commissioners' Court is scheduled for TUESDAY, 11/20/2012
