Guy Bailey receives recognition for Border Texan of the Year

A resolution was approved on the consent agenda in honor of University of Texas Rio Grande Valley President Dr. Guy Bailey for being named 2019 Border Texan of the Year.

Bailey was named the first president of the new UTRGV in 2014. Under his leadership, the university has experienced extensive success in multiple areas.

Currently, UTRGV is ranked first among all Texas Universities for awarding the most undergraduate and graduate degrees to Hispanics. His leadership and commitment to providing a world-class education have helped transform South Texas with unlimited educational opportunities. 

The County of Hidalgo congratulates Dr. Bailey on the well-deserved honor of being named Border Texan of the Year. County Judge Richard F. Cortez will be presenting the resolution to him at the Border Texas of the Year banquet on Thursday evening at the McAllen Convention Center.

Hidalgo County Assistant Veterans Service Officer Raymond Herrera led the Pledge of Allegiance at today's Commissioners Court.

Herrera served in the U.S. Navy as a Search and Rescue Swimmer from 2008-2013.

He holds a Master’s Degree from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Hidalgo County thanks him and all veterans for their service.

Mark your calendar for the 2019 South Texas All Hazards Conference on March 25-26 

The 2019 South Texas All Hazards Conference is a joint effort between Hidalgo County and the City of McAllen.  The two day event will take place at the McAllen Convention Center.

This year's theme is Texas Strong. The STAHC provides leaders, decision makers, healthcare clinicians, preparedness professionals, and first responders with opportunities for networking, resource sharing, continuing education, and scholarly exchange. 

The 8th annual conference is sponsored by Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department, City of McAllen, Hidalgo County Emergency Management, and Texas Department of Emergency Management with funding provided by the Texas Department of State Health Services.  

More than 70 vendors will be available to provide critical preparedness information and resources to help empower participants with the necessary tools to prepare for a hurricane, natural disaster or mass fatality situation.

Top winners announced for the 2019 Nationwide Team Challenge

2019 Nationwide Team Challenge
The top three Hidalgo County teams for the 2019 Nationwide Team Challenge were recognized in court.

In a continuing effort to promote a healthy workforce, the Hidalgo County Wellness Program encouraged employees to form teams to compete in the 2019 Nationwide Team Challenge. Recent academic research has shown that incentives and games are powerful weight loss tools.

The challenge was held August 2 through October 25 with 15 Hidalgo County teams joining in, said Wellness Coordinator Diana Huallpa, who presented the top three teams at Commissioners Court today.

"A total of 75 county participants took part in the wellness challenge and lost a total of 528 pounds," said Huallpa.

The program challenged employees to convert to a healthier lifestyle by making better food choices and exercising.

The county ranked 15th nationwide at the end of the challenge, reported Huallpa.

The top Hidalgo County employees were Gustavo Garza, Esteban Mata, Moises Flores, Severo Canales, and Alejandro Placencia.

"I would like to thank Commissioners Court for promoting exercise, better eating habits, and encouraging employees to live a better lifestyle," said top winner of the Nationwide Team Challenge Garza. "This program has made a big impact on our lives."

Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo "Eddie" Cantu commended all the individuals who participated in the challenge for taking the step towards a healthier lifestyle. 

The top three Hidalgo County Teams were: Los Contras (Esteban Mata, Alejandro Placencia, Jose Cantu, Juan Zamora, and Michael Cerda), King's Corner (Gustavo Garza, Lora Briones, Diana Valdez, Jennifer Garza, and Claudette Guerrero), and Perspire to Inspire (Sandra DeLeon, Isaac Sulemana, Veronica Trevino, Julia Sullivan, and Brandy Salinas).

Commissioners Court honors Small Business Saturday

Hidalgo County supports local businesses that create jobs, boost our local economy and preserve our communities.

Commissioners Court passed a proclamation on the consent agenda celebrating local small businesses and the contributions they make to the economy and community.

A majority of companies planning promotions on Small Business Saturday said the day helps their business stand out during the busy holiday shopping season and contributes significantly to their holiday sales each year.

Hidalgo County proclaims November 30, 2019 as Small Business Saturday and encourages all residents to support small businesses and merchants throughout the year.

Elections Administrator provides updates

The Official Canvassing of the Election Results for the November 5, 2019 Constitutional Amendment Election are in.

“I’m happy to report that everything ran smoothly and elections staff has been working diligently for our voters to administer elections in an efficient manner,” said Elections Administrator Yvonne Ramon.

Ramon reminds everyone that there are three runoffs taking place in the county.  Early voting for the city of Alamo runoff election is November 20 - December 3 with Election Day held on Saturday, December 7, and  early voting for the City of Edinburg and City of La Joya runoff elections will be November 25 - December 6.  Election Day is Tuesday, December 10.
