The court approved orders to install streetlights in eight unincorporated subdivisions in the county.

Budget and Management Office provides update on Hidalgo County Subdivision Streetlight Program

Hidalgo County Commissioners Court approved orders for the installation of streetlights in eight of the county's unincorporated subdivisions. With the approval of the orders, Hidalgo County is now authorized to work with Magic Valley Co-Op and AEP for engineering, design, and construction of the streetlights.

"These streetlights will benefit our impacted rural residents by improving the safety, security and well-being of individuals living in those areas," said Budget and Management Strategic Planning Director Rey Salazar.  "Hidalgo County remains steadfast and committed to assisting and, most importantly, partnering with our rural communities on the path towards subdivision streetlights."

The eight subdivisions are: Un Nuevo Amanecer (Pct. 1); Village Grove #2 and Whitewing 2 (Pct. 2); Eduardos 4, 5, and 6 (Pct. 3); and, Huisache Acres 11 and Rincon de Valle 3 (Pct. 4).

New Constitutional Amendment proposes creating a flood infrastructure fund

Hidalgo County Elections Administrator Yvonne Ramon presented to the court with an update on all the proposed Constitutional Amendments that will appear on the Nov. 5, 2019 ballot.  There are 10 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution. These amendments were submitted by the 86th Legislature, Regular Session, of the State of Texas.

Among the amendments on the ballot is Proposition 8, which proposes creating a flood infrastructure fund as a special fund in the state treasury.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: "The constitutional amendment providing for the creation of the flood infrastructure fund to assist in the financing of drainage, flood mitigation, and flood control projects."

Hidalgo County Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes, in conjunction with Drainage District #1, presented a resolution in support of Proposition 8. 

his would allow for the creation of the Flood Infrastructure Fund (FIF) that would authorize $793 million in flood-control projects in the State of Texas," said Fuentes.

Commissioners Court unanimously approved the resolution in supporting Proposition 8.

U.S. Air Force Veteran James Barnes led the Court in Pledge of Allegiance

Mr. James Barnes, a Vietnam veteran who served as Captain in the U.S. Air Force, led the Pledge of Allegiance at Commissioners Court.

Barnes, who also served in two combat tours in South East Asia, served in the U.S. Air Force from 1965-1973.
Commissioners Court has started a new tradition of beginning each meeting with a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces being recognized and then leading the Court in the Pledge of Allegiance. We thank Mr. Barnes for his service.

The Drainage District Board of Directors meets at 9:30 a.m. followed by a brief Commissioners Court at 10:00 a.m. with a workshop to follow.

Meetings are held in the Commissioners Courtroom, located on the first floor of the Courthouse Annex III at 100 E. Cano St. in Edinburg.
