Commissioners Court extends Declaration of Disaster for Hidalgo County

Commissioners Court voted to extend the local state of emergency declaration at a special meeting held at 3 p.m. today.

On September 13, County Judge Ramon Garcia signed a proclamation declaring a local state of disaster due to result of damages from the rain event last week. Under Texas statutes, a county judge may issue a declaration for a period of not more than seven days, unless the same is continued by consent of the Commissioners Court.

Judge Garcia's
declaration was set to expire today. The extension approved today will be in effect until it is no longer needed, said Emergency Management Coordinator Ricardo Saldaña

"We're still in the midst of dewatering areas of the county," said Saldaña. "Over 25 inches of rain fell in rural areas of Precincts 3 and 4."

The extension allows more time to determine if the county will meet the threshold to qualify for state and federal aid.

"The declaration also allows the right of entry onto private property to assist," said Precinct 4 Commissioner Joseph Palacios.

A disaster declaration by Gov. Greg Abbott for Hidalgo County and 77 other counties increases the chance of the state qualifying for federal aid, said Saldaña.
