Commissioners Court honors  community organizations for selection to Walkability Action Institute

Commissioners Court approved a Resolution in recognition of the Hidalgo County MPO, Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council and Texas A&M University Health Science Center for their acceptance to attend the fourth annual Walkability Action Institute. The group was one of nine selected to attend the conference in Decatur, Georgia from April 9 - 12, 2018.

The vision of the Walkability Action Institute is to yield access and opportunity for active living through multiple community sectors, and to reduce the behavior of physical inactivity over the long-term, which is a main risk factor for chronic diseases and leading causes of death and debilitation like heart disease, stroke, hypertension, obesity, and type II diabetes.

The skills and knowledge obtained will help improve the quality of life for the residents of Hidalgo County and influence a better way of living for many.

"We are very excited to be selected to attend the conference-we look forward to participating in team action plans to further strengthen our community," said Texas A&M Health Services Program Manager Evelia C. Castillo.

Aging roof cause for leak at Courthouse

Commissioners Court Executive Officer Valde Guerra reported that repairs will be needed on a section of the County Courthouse roof after a leak was discovered inside the 92nd District Courtroom on Monday.

The accumulation of light rain over the past couple of days caused damage to the roof, reported Guerra. The county put a temporary fix on the roof until repairs can be made.

"I spoke to Facilities Management and repair cost for materials will range from $35,000 - $50,000," said Guerra. "We are exploring the option for labor costs to be covered by County Staff who are certified for the type of roofing we have in place."
