400 now dead due to COVID-19 in Hidalgo County

The death toll in Hidalgo County has reached 400 as local officials announced 33 more COVID-19 related deaths Wednesday.

The county also announced another 650 individuals have tested positive for the virus, bringing the total number of cases to 13,776.

Invoking the Texas Disaster Act of 1975, Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez ordered a lockdown and curfew for all residents in the county that takes effect at midnight tonight.

Residents are required to stay home unless procuring or providing goods and services that the county deems “essential.”


Texas county stores bodies in trucks as state sets one-day record for COVID-19 deaths

Texas on Wednesday set one-day records for increases in COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations in the state, forcing one county to store bodies in refrigerated trucks and prompting a top health official there to call for new stay-at-home orders.

“Do I think that a stay-at-home order is medically indicated at this point? Absolutely,” Melendez said.

32 Hidalgo Co. inmates test positive for COVID-19

Thirty-two inmates at the Hidalgo County jail have tested positive for COVID-19, officials announced Wednesday.

Some 41 inmates were tested for the virus, of whom 32 tested positive, according to a tweet by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. The newly positive inmates are in addition to six who had previously tested positive, the release stated.
