Abbott orders flags flown at half-staff as tribute to McAllen officers

Gov. Greg Abbott granted permission to fly the United States and Texas flags at half-staff in honor of two McAllen police officers who were killed in the line of duty Saturday.

“Today we mourn with a heavy heart the lives of two courageous members of the City of McAllen Police Department,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said about fallen McAllen police officers Edelmiro Garza Jr. and Ismael Chavez Jr.. in a news release Sunday. “These two officers left an indelible mark on their community and the state of Texas. May God be with their family and friends during this difficult time.”

8 more COVID-19 deaths as Hidalgo Co. surpasses 8,000 cases

Hidalgo County has surpassed the 8,000 mark in positive COVID-19 cases as 313 more people tested positive over the weekend.

The county also announced eight more deaths as a result of the coronavirus, bringing the total number of fatalities to 150.

Family, friends mourn slain McAllen police officers

A day after the slaying of two McAllen police officers, friends and family members are remembering their loved ones, including the alleged shooter. 

Police did not disclose any more information on Sunday about the deaths of officers Edelmiro Garza Jr. and Ismael Chavez Jr., two officers killed Saturday afternoon after responding to a domestic disturbance call. 


Early voting closes, Election Day approaches with more than 13,000 ballots already cast

Early voting in the primary runoff election came to a close Friday with over 13,000 people casting their ballots in Hidalgo County.

According to the Hidalgo County Elections Department, a total of 13,186 early votes were cast between Monday, June 29 and Friday, July 10.
