Coronavirus deaths begin to stress Valley mortuary industry

The evening someone tests positive for COVID-19 in Hidalgo County, they appear on a list the county sends out with the city they live in. A new case with no name, accompanied by their approximate age and their gender.

If they get a lot worse, they’ll end up on a register of COVID-19 patients the county says are in intensive care units.

1,274 new COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County; most in a single day

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez reported Thursday afternoon that 1,274 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the area, soaring past the previously single-day high, and also reported 10 new deaths related to the disease.

The drastic increase in cases comes a day after a massive testing effort at Bert Ogden Arena and H-E-B Park began, in which 5,000 tests were administered.

Hidalgo County officials announced 20 deaths and 1,274 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, setting new records for single-day reports in cases and fatalities. There are now 123 recorded COVID-19 fatalities, over half of which were reported this week. 

One of Thursday's reported deaths was a male in his 20s from McAllen and 16 individuals who died were in their 70s.

Hidalgo County is now one of the nation’s COVID-19 hotspots

Hidalgo County is now one of the nation’s hotspots for COVID-19, its county judge announced Wednesday.

Over the past three days, Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez has reported that 44 people have died from the coronavirus. On Monday he reported 16 deaths, on Tuesday 15 deaths, and on Wednesday 13 deaths.
