Hidalgo Co. to discuss distribution of federal relief funds

Hidalgo County Commissioners Court will decide Tuesday how to distribute more than $151 million in Coronavirus Relief Funds following a round of unofficial negotiations with city leaders who also want a piece of the pie.

The county received the CRF funds earlier this year as part of the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, a federal relief package Congress passed late March.

New mobile testing site for COVID-19 to open in Edinburg

Another mobile testing site for COVID-19 will soon open in Edinburg, according to U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, D-McAllen, made the announcement Monday in a news release, confirming that the site will be set up at Carmen Avila Elementary School, located at 9205 Carmen Avila Road.

Hidalgo County surpasses 7,000 COVID-19 tests administered, announces eight more cases

Hidalgo County on Monday announced eight more residents tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 448.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez says the county surpasses the 7,000 mark for tests. A total of 7,203 residents in the county have been tested for the virus. He added 262 tests are pending.

Valley falls behind in 2020 census figures

Texas is lagging when it comes to filling out the 2020 census, but the Rio Grande Valley is even further behind than the state average.

According to Jerome Garza, area regional manager of the U.S. Census Bureau, Hidalgo and Cameron County are at about 41% of the households that have only answered the census.
