Hidalgo County requires masks at its facilities; launches resource website

Hidalgo County employees and the general public will have to wear face masks at all county-owned facilities and parking lots, officials announced Tuesday.

Commissioners issued the order in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prepare for hurricane season

The National Weather Service invites the community to be ready for hurricane season as part of the “Hurricane Preparedness Week,” which ends on Saturday.

Gov. Abbott announces plan to reopen Texas salons, barbershops and gyms

On Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott made announcements over the next phase to reopen Texas businesses.

In a press conference, the governor said more than 427,000 coronavirus tests have been administered in the state, including more than 33,000 people who tested positive and 906 deaths.

Hidalgo County takes first steps to expand health department facilities, COVID-19 response

Hidalgo County commissioners gave preliminary approval on Tuesday to expand the health department facilities.

The commissioners' court decided to assign property for the addition of portable buildings and the construction of a laboratory. They will be staffed by employees who will be addressing the needs of the community during the coronavirus pandemic and beyond.


Election officials left planning for the unknown

In March under the power of the state disaster declaration, Governor Greg Abbott, delayed the May runoff and city elections until July 14. In April a state district judge ruled Texas voters can claim fears of COVID-19 as a disability when requesting a mail-in ballot. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton says he will appeal the ruling.

Hidalgo County: No new virus cases

For the first time in 45 days, Hidalgo County reported that on Tuesday it did not have a positive COVID-19 case to report.

“This is great news, but we shouldn’t let our guard down,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said. “We need to keep this up by continuing to practice the safety measures that we have been practicing, including staying at home, good hygiene and avoiding crowds.”
