Hidalgo County law enforcement to enforce shelter-at-home order

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office announced Wednesday it will begin stepping up enforcement for the county’s shelter-at-home order.

Individuals who are found not to be in compliance with any part of the order will receive a citation or be arrested, according to a news release from HCSO. Violators will face a fine of up to to $1,000 or 180 days in jail.

Hidalgo County officials are scrambling to find ways to keep residents at home as they warn of a possible onslaught of COVID-19 cases.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said he is concerned not enough people are following a shelter-at-home order he issued last week to combat the pandemic.

The Rio Grande Valley reported more than 100 COVID-19 cases that included infants and children as of Wednesday evening.

Two infants and 14 others tested positive for the disease in Hidalgo County, bringing the total tally there to 62, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez announced Wednesday. Four have been hospitalized.

McAllen mayor shuts down Palm View Golf Course

McAllen Mayor Jim Darling announced Wednesday that since people won’t stop going to the Palm View Golf Course, it’s closed until further notice.

Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said in a release Tuesday he is considering stronger enforcement orders because he is concerned not enough people are following the shelter-in-place order.

Coronavirus Cases In The Valley Grow To More Than 100

The Rio Grande Valley saw a significant rise in the number of coronavirus cases Wednesday.  11 residents of Cameron County and 16 residents of Hidalgo County tested positive for the COVID-19 disease. 

County health officials say many of the cases are travel-related, but the other individuals contracted the virus via local person-to-person spread.
