It is with great honor that the Planning Committee announces the 2nd annual Veterans Salute: “Honoring All Who Served” coming up this Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Weslaco National Guard Armory.
All veterans and their families from across the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas are invited to attend this event, which will offer something for everyone. A bar-b-cue cook-off will pit many different veteran and veteran-oriented teams (including the Donna VFW, Donna American Legion, Weslaco Catholic War Veterans, police departments of McAllen and Harlingen and Pct. 1 just to name a few) against each other in friendly competition. There will be games for children, door prizes and food galore, educational and job information booths (list included) just for veterans and their needs, and a special remembrance ceremony to honor those who have passed on.
Weslaco Mayor Buddy de la Rosa will open the event with a few words and Brigadier General Eddy Spurgin, Assistant Division Commander, 36th Infantry Division, Texas Army National Guard, will be the keynote speaker (bio attached).
We hope to see all veterans and their families at the Weslaco National Guard Armory. This is an outdoor event. Gates open at 10 a.m.
This event is graciously sponsored by donations from private businesses and individuals. Special thanks to the planning committee: University of Texas Pan-American, UTPA Veterans Business Outreach Center, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Jennifer Wood and Melinda Leo-Rodriguez (whom without this event would not have been possible), Maj. Jose Rivera and the Weslaco National Guard Armory, Humana, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hidalgo County Pct. 1 and the Hidalgo County Judge’s Office, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
