Hidalgo County Commissioners Court approved a resolution in honor of the University of Texas - Pan American (UTPA) Pharmacy Program for receiving the 2013 Examples of Excelencia Award for their Cooperative Doctoral Pharmacy Program (CDPP) with the University of Texas Austin. Examples of Excelencia is a national initiative that systematically identifies and honors programs boosting Latino enrollment, performance and graduation with evidence of effectiveness. The CDPP offers a six-year curriculum leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree, with 66 students currently enrolled, the program has proven itself both strongly effective and successful, with its graduates achieving a 100% passing rate on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Exam (MPJE). Since the program’s inception in 2001, the CDPP has graduated 75 students from the program; and 82% of the graduates have returned to work in the RGV, which speaks volumes about the passion the students have for this region.
The UTPA/UT Austin CDPP was selected from among 165 programs from 22 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. The CDPP submitted a brief history of their program to Examples of Excelencia, along with examples of perceived need, program activities, long-term goals, and evidence of the program’s value, which provides insight into successful programs and key program characteristics essential to Latino student success.
Present to receive the resolution were UTPA President Dr. Robert Nelson, UTPA Provost Dr. Havidan Rodriguez, Vice President of Business Affairs Marty Baylor, Vice President for University Advancement Veronica Gonzalez, Vice President for Information Technology Dr. Jeff Graham, Executive Director for Institutional Research S.J.
