Hidalgo County Commissioners Court approved a resolution recognizing McAllen Independent School District's Andrew Jackson Elementary for winning the 7th Annual Scholastic Summer Challenge. The goal of the Scholastic Summer Challenge is to motivate children to read over the summer and build their interest and confidence in reading, and to also improve their understanding skills, comprehensive fluency and critical thinking. Through technology and a program used on student-issued iPads, students had access to download as many as 20 books at a time and had access to read 18,400 e-books this summer. To motivate the students, Jackson Elementary held read-a-thons, encouraged competition between grade levels and used a School Messenger automated call system to remind families to continue to encourage their child to read. Each student was measured by the amount of minutes spent reading, and averaged 122 hours, 45 minutes of reading, totaling over 6.3 million recorded minutes of reading. Jackson Elementary students placed first in this year's Scholastic Summer Challenge, beating nearly 4,300 participating schools representing all 50 states and 30 countries.

For their notable achievement, Jackson Elementary will be rewarded with a visit in the spring from Dave Pilkey, author of the bestselling Captain Underpants series and will be featured in the 2014 Scholastic Book Fairs and bookstores nationwide, and will also receive a personalized plaque.

When presented with the resolution, Andrew Jackson Elementary Principal Sylvia Ibarra thanked Commissioners Court for the recognition and stated that it was a group effort between teachers, parents and students that they were able to achieve such a milestone.

Hidalgo County Commissioners Court honors and recognizes McAllen Independent School District's Andrew Jackson Elementary for achieving this distinguished award and for encouraging students to build their interest and confidence and reading.
