The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and its governing body, the Texas Transportation Commission, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the first phase of the FM 396 Overpass, in Mission, Texas. This overpass will provide easier access to the Anzalduas International Bridge and will help the Rio Grande Valley facilitate the $1 billion-per-day trade and commerce industry to and from Mexico. TxDOT has worked to provide safe and reliable transportation solutions for South Texas, and Hidalgo County has participated in many joint transportation projects to promote the trade and commerce that thrives in the region.

Texas Transportation Commission Chairman Ted Houghton addressed the participants by stating that working together to fulfill the needs of the Rio Grande Valley is what will continue to make it grow. “As we stand here celebrating, you can see all the trucks passing by hauling goods from Mexico,” said Houghton. “That is proof of how this overpass was much needed.” Texas Transportation Commissioner Jeff Austin III, agreed and expressed how though the first phase is completed, TxDOT still has work ahead to fulfill the infrastructure needs of the Rio Grande Valley and South Texas.

In attendance at the ceremony were the members of the Texas Transportation Commission, as well as special guests Texas State Senator Juan “Chuy" Hinojosa, Texas State Representatives Armando Martinez, Sergio Munoz, Jr., Oscar Longoria, and Bobby Guerra, Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Commissioner Hector “Tito” Palacios, Mission Mayor Norberto Salinas, and representing Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia, Chief Administrator Yolanda Chapa.

After closing remarks, members of the Texas Transportation Commission and dignitaries, cut the ceremonial ribbon, making the opening of the FM 396 overpass official.

The Texas Transportation Commission will hold its monthly meeting tomorrow in McAllen; today's ceremony was part of the itinerary for the Commission's visit, which also included tours of various current and future transportation projects and visits to the various ports of entry in South Texas.
