Hidalgo County Commissioners Court announced the 2013-2014 Hidalgo County Employee and Dependent Scholarship recipients. The Hidalgo County Competitive Scholarship was first approved in 2008 by Commissioners Court as a resolution to help support employees' and their dependents' goals of obtaining higher education. The scholarship program was first implemented in collaboration with South Texas College and extended in 2009 to include the University of Texas -Pan American. Since then, the program has been able to fund approximately four recipients on an annual basis, continuing to support access to higher education for employees and dependents.

The recipients completed a scholarship application, including a personal essay on their community service and volunteer experience and what they have done to make life in Hidalgo County better. The scholarship applications were independently reviewed by a scholarship committee at each college, judged on GPA, Service, awards and the essay.

Recipients were presented with a congratulatory letter from Judge Ramon Garcia and a special Certificate of Recognition and upon receiving the recognition they thanked Commissioners Court for the assistance to pay for tuition and school expenses.
