Hidalgo County Commissioners Court approved a resolution honoring the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of three Ignite Public School students from Weslaco, Texas, inventors of a portable battery charger for cell phones. Angel Acosta, 15, Julian Sanchez, 15, and David Wilkins, 17, were three classmates in Ivan Villarreal’s A+ certification class who were "ignited" to solve a common problem afflicting many - the untimely and often inappropriate end to a cell phone battery's charge. The trio put their ingenuity, teamwork, and creative thinking skills to work to create an affordable and convenient portable electronic charger made out of recycled material.

Commissioners Court congratulated the students on their invention, and also applauded Ignite Public Schools for encouraging and supporting technological and entrepreneurial education, and giving the students the tools and resources necessary to bring their idea into reality.

The students were accompanied by their Technology Instructor Ivan Villareal and their mothers, Maria Wilkens and Eva Moreno. Student David Wilkins thanked the Commissioners for the recognition and described how this invention is only the beginning; he plans to use solar energy in the next line of portable electronic battery chargers.
