On Thursday, April 18, the Hidalgo County District Clerk's Office opened its doors to the public as part of National County Government. District Clerk Laura Hinojosa welcomed visitors to her office in an effort to showcase everything that goes on in her department on a daily basis. Visitors were given a tour of the large department, which serves as registrar, recorder and custodian of all documents that are part of criminal and civil actions. Among its future goals, the District Clerk's office is working to preserve the county's historical documents for future generations to enjoy. Guests were treated to a collection of old Criminal Docket's from 1895, with one of the most common crimes recorded was "Theft of Meat Cattle." Once a document has been restored, it is re-bound and each paper is placed in a plastic sheet protecting the words on the page. The District Clerk's office wants to thank everyone who came to their open house.
