[ARCHIVED] Garden of Hope Project holds "Harvest Ceremony" for Hidalgo County Families

The Coalition for Valley Families held its second annual Garden of Hope “Harvest Ceremony.” This year’s event was held Wednesday, January 16 at the Alamo Community Center.

The CVF is compromised of employees from different Hidalgo County Departments who volunteer their time to help the community. The mission of the Garden of Hope Project is to teach local families how to grow their own vegetables so they may duplicate the process at home. The project promotes healthy eating habits, exercise and family togetherness.

This year the organization selected seven Alamo families to learn the art of gardening by Master Gardner Ricardo Carranza. The CVF donated the compost and seeds to build the garden in the land of the Alamo Community Center. The families began planting their vegetables last September, stopping by several times a week to tend to their garden. The produce is completely organic and free of pesticides. Once the harvest is over, the families can continue to plant new vegetables at the community center or take their seeds home to start their own garden.
