Hidalgo County officials want to remind residents and registered voters that Early Voting in the 2012 General Election is currently underway. Up for consideration on the ballot are the Presidential election, various federal, state and county offices, local school board elections, city elections as well as a referendum for drainage improvements in Hidalgo County.
County officials are impressed with the early voting turnout so far; Elections Administrator Yvonne Ramón has reported that, compared to the 2008 Presidential Election, there has been an 42.9% increase in turnout during the first three days of Early Voting (34,782 in 2012 as compared to 24,338 in 2008). If the trend continues, this year’s General Election is poised to shatter previous turnout records.
One of the likely contributing factors to this increase is the County’s reintroduction of two mobile voting units this year. The County has 28 permanent Early Voting locations, and has scheduled two mobile units throughout the County during these two weeks. The units are scheduled to be placed at convenient locations, including banks, hospitals, and churches, thereby providing greater access for those voters who may not have otherwise had an opportune moment to exercise their right to participate in the electoral process. For early voting polling locations and mobile voting sites, visit http://www.co.hidalgo.tx.us/index.aspx?NID=1354.
Another factor affecting the increase in turnout is the tremendous effort put forth by the Advocacy Alliance Center of Texas (AACT), a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose primary aim is to increase participation in the electoral process. AACT has partnered with Hidalgo County to increase turnout among Hidalgo County voters, promoting civic participation and educating the community on the importance of their vote and their voice. Early Voting continues through Friday, November 2, 2012; polls are open from 7:00 am – 7:00 pm (Sunday, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm). Election Day is Tuesday, November 6, 2012. Voters are encouraged to contact the Elections Department with any questions they may have regarding the 2012 General Election.
