Nine Hidalgo County 4-H members were recognized by the County Commissioners' Court July 24 for their achievements in competitive events in the areas of clothing and textiles, fashion design, and consumer decision making at the district and state level. Youths recognized were Renee Boyle, Claudia Martinez, Vanessa Martinez, Timmy Bradford, Matthew Salinas, Amanda Salinas, Brianna Bullion, Beth Quintanilla, and Bianca Garcia. Accompanying them was Nora N. Garza, County Extension Agent, with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Hidalgo County. Ms. Garza is their adviser and coach. These 4-H projects expose youths to the academic disciplines for family and consumer science and help them gain valuable life and leadership skills, which can be applied to daily life. More importantly, the youths exhibited the highest standard of character when competing, and participated in community service as a way to share what they had learned with others in need.
