Commissioners’ Court approved a resolution honoring the late Marine Staff Sergeant Joseph Henry Fankhauser of McAllen who died April 22, 2012 in Helmand Province, Afghanistan at the age of 30 while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Sgt. Fankhauser attended Sharyland High School, and later graduated from Mason High School in Central Texas; he enlisted in the U.S. Marines after graduation in 2000, and was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Pendleton, California, serving as an explosive ordinance disposal technician. Sgt. Fankhauser was serving his fifth combat deployment; having been deployed to Iraq in 2004, 2006, and 2007 and Afghanistan in 2011, he was serving his second tour in Afghanistan at the time of his death. He is remembered by loved ones as a man of courage, strength, and compassion who gave unselfishly to others; Sgt. Fankhauser is survived by his father Henry (Betty) Fankhauser of McAllen, his mother Mary Wyscarver of Temple, and his wife Heather Fankhauser.
