The Alamo Community Resource Center, Buckner International, and Wilshire Baptist Church volunteers from Dallas assisted in providing a Spring Break Youth Camp for local colonia families living in Precinct 2. Volunteers worked on several projects throughout the week including: constructing nineteen beds for needy families, beautifying the Alamo CRC, and hosting a variety of children's activities throughout the day for children ranging in ages from four to seven years old.

"We have been coming down to the Rio Grande Valley in partnership with Buckner's 'Kids Heart Program' since 2003," said Julian Vigil, a Wilshire Baptist Church Volunteer. "We enjoy lending a hand to the colonia community and this year, we were able to bring down about thirty volunteers to assist in different projects throughout Hidalgo County."

Vigil also said that each year, the group, in partnership with Buckner International focuses on different areas and projects, pointing out that last year they helped construct several homes in colonias. This year, colonia residents in Alamo were in need of beds and together with volunteers, they were able to construct several for their homes. Each family who took a bed home also received a mattress.

"We are glad to do what we can for the community and look forward to continuing our partnership with this area, " said Vigil. "It's become so much more than helping families, you get to really see the difference you are making and that is just a great feeling, I brought my son on the trip with me this year and he has enjoyed every second of it."

Buckner International is a non-profit organization based in Dallas that focuses on the needs of boys and girls, families and aging senior adults. With locations in more than 17 U.S. cities and 28 countries around the globe, they have helped thousands of individuals and families.
