Representatives from various state, local, education, and legislative entities came together this afternoon to discuss firearm safety around schools within Hidalgo County. Stemming from the incident that occurred on December at Harwell Middle School in Edinburg in which two students were shot, leaders and school officials want to ensure the that a similar occurrence is not repeated in the future. Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District along with Superintendent Dr. Rene Gutierrez held a panel discussion which included: Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia, Precinct 4 Commissioner Joseph Palacios, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino, State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, State Representative Sergio Munoz Jr., and ECISD Board President Carmen Gonzalez, among others. Also in attendance were superintendents from school districts throughout Hidalgo County, school board members, school principals, parents, law enforcement officials, and ranch land owners.

Today’s discussion was focused on cultivating ideas which would assist Senator Hinojosa and Representative Munoz in drafting legislation that could improve firearm safety around schools not only in Hidalgo County, but throughout the State of Texas. Although no immediate solutions were specified, there were a variety of viable options presented by all stakeholders affected by the issue. Most notably, emphasis by most parties centered on the need for a multi-faceted approach when drafting legislation. Hidalgo County will continue to provide information on this matter as it becomes available.
