This week, Hidalgo County joined communities across the nation in proclaiming April 25 – 30, 2011 as Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Week in celebration of the federal program’s impact on improving the quality of life for residents of local communities.Funded by the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and in operation since 1975, the CDBG program assists local governments in meeting the needs of low- and moderate-income individuals, neighborhoods, and communities. Hidalgo County receives CDBG funding through its Urban County Program, and uses the funding to support projects in the County that revitalize neighborhoods, spur economic development, and improve community facilities and services.“The CDBG program allows us to have a significant and meaningful impact on the development of our communities,” said Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia. “This week, we celebrate HUD’s continued support of our local efforts to improve housing, public facilities, public works, and other amenities and services for our residents to enjoy,” Garcia continued. To culminate the week, Hidalgo County will host a free CDBG celebration from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, April 30, 2011. The celebration will be held at La Joya Municipal Lion’s Park (a CDBG-funded project), and will provide free food, refreshments, games and prizes. The pool will also be open to the public. A program with local, county, state and federal officials and community leaders will commence at 10 am.
