[ARCHIVED] Love Thy Neighbor Shoe Drive

Hidalgo County has partnered with the 1st Annual Love Thy Neighbor Children’s Shoe Drive to collect footwear for the needy children in the Rio Grande Valley. The shoe drive will be held starting from December 7 to December 18, 2009. Donation boxes for new children’s shoes are located at various county offices and buildings, and all Hidalgo County employees and the general public are encouraged to contribute to this worthy cause.

Shoes collected will be distributed to needy children in the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding areas in an effort to prevent the health risks associated with children going barefoot or without adequate foot protection.

Children’s shoes are often overlooked as an essential necessity; however, bare feet can seriously injure children’s health with the risk of tetanus, cuts, abrasions, viruses and bacteria, puncture wounds, plantar warts, and other foot problems. Additionally, children outgrow shoes at a rapid rate, making it difficult for low-income families to purchase them on a frequent basis.

“This time of year presents a valuable opportunity to reflect on our blessings and selflessly give of ourselves in the spirit of the season,” said Hidalgo County Judge Rene A. Ramirez. “I am pleased that Hidalgo County is participating in such a worthy cause for the least fortunate and youngest members of our community.”

The 1st Annual Love They Neighbor Shoe Drive is sponsored by Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley and Shoes for Orphan Souls, a ministry of Buckner International, and various businesses, civic organizations, community-based organizations, and faith-based organizations.

“To see impact that a loving gesture such as the gift of shoes can have on a child’s innocent soul, especially one who has gone so long without, is the driving force behind this project,” said Mike Robledo, Shoe Drive Organizer and Hidalgo County employee. To encourage participation in the shoe drive, Bishop Raymundo J. Peña of the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville added, “We must always remember that there are those less fortunate than ourselves.”

Collection boxes will be located across the Rio Grande Valley. The greatest need is for new children’s leather or canvas tennis shoes. Financial contributions are also encouraged and will go directly toward the purchase of new children’s shoes. To donate online, visit
