Why a scholarship? Hidalgo County is committed to the educational advancement of its employees and their families, believing that a strong, educated workforce leads to a more prosperous Hidalgo County.
Who is eligible? Hidalgo County employees who have worked for the county for at least one year continuously. And their dependents; that is, legal spouse or unmarried dependent (step)son/daughter, 24 years of age or younger.
Is the scholarship need or merit based? Both. By making those that are eligible for federal grants ineligible for this scholarship, the award targets the working class families of Hidalgo County. Employees are expected to maintain a 2.5 GPA and dependents a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
How many hours does the scholarship cover? Any course I want? Up to six hours per scholarship at South Texas College, the McAllen or Weslaco campus. Only courses that apply toward a degree plan or certification or that are directly work related are eligible. (aka. No basketweaving, art, martial arts, etc.)
Can I/do I have to reapply each semester? Yes. Yes. There’s no limit, but you may not get selected each time. This application is for the summer semester. There will be another one for fall, and so on.
Where’s the money coming from? Private contributions. No county funds.
How many scholarships will be awarded? Up to four: two for employees and two for dependents.
