Commissioners Court celebrated the victory of the Edcouch-Elsa Boys Powerlifting Team for winning back-to-back State Championships at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Division I. The athletes, their coaches, school officials, and families filled the room as they were recognized for their grand accomplishment. They are the first team in the Rio Grande Valley to win back-to-back state championships.Sponsored by Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes, the team received a resolution congratulating them for their academic and athletic achievements.The championship competition was held last March in Abilene. Coach Martin Marichalar was signaled out for his exceptional coaching efforts as well as junior Ricky Ortiz, for winning the state title in the 148-pound weight class and setting two state records; senior Cody Alvarado also won the state championship and tied a state record in the 242-pound weight class; senior Nate Valejo brought home silver for second place in the 220-pound weight class; and Imanol Rodriguez placed 7th in the 275-pound division.Commissioners Court also recognized the Edcouch-Elsa ISD Board of Trustees, President Robert Schmalzried, Vice President Chris Morales, Secretary Robert Peacock, and Trustees Juan Jose Ybarra, Tony Barco, Rolando Lozano, and Fernando Torres; and Superintendent Ronaldo J. Cavazos for their support of the team.
