COMMISSIONERS COURT WILL NOT RAISE TAXES IN 2019

Hand Raised CC

Hidalgo County Tax Assessor-Collector Pablo "Paul" Villarreal Jr. joined Budget Officer Sergio Cruz to present the benchmark report on 2018 tax rates, which includes the effective tax rate, the rollback rate, and last year's tax rate.

According to Villarreal, the "Effective Tax Rate," the tax that is required to maintain the county's operating budget is .5978 cents. Commissioners Court voted to not increase taxes and keep to the current tax rate of 58 cents per $100 valuation.

"Last year, after not raising taxes for well over a dozen years, Commissioners Court was able to lower taxes from 59 to 58 cents," said Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo "Eddie" Cantu. "The county is in a strong financial state, which is why we are able to fund county operations without the need to increase the tax rate."
