Commissioners Court proclaimed April as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month and urges all citizens to work together to help reduce child abuse and neglect significantly in years to come.The proclamation was presented to members of the Court Appointed Special representatives. Commissioners Court has supported CASA since starting the program 24 years ago, said Interim Director Lupe Silva."CASA provides a voice to the court system for children who have been abused and neglected in our county," said Silva.Child Protective Services conducted 6,211 investigations of child abuse and neglect in Hidalgo County in 2017. Of those cases, 1,870 were confirmed as victims of child abuse and neglect, including nine child fatalities.Child abuse prevention is a community responsibility and finding solutions depends on involvement among all people. Communities must make every effort to promote programs that benefit children and their families, read the proclamation."Thank you for the ongoing support," said Silva, who was joined by CASA staff and volunteers.County Judge Ramon Garcia commended the CASA staff and volunteers for their work with the children and their efforts to promote child abuse awareness programs that benefit children and their families.'"Thank you for the services you provide our county and our county's children," said Garcia.
