APRIL IS FAIR HOUSING MONTH

Urban County Program Director Diana Serna presented two proclamations in support of programs that support decent, safe and sanitary housing for all residents during the April 3 Commissioners Court meeting.

The first proclamation approved by the court declared the week of April 2nd as National Community Development Week to celebrate the Community Development Block Grant Program and the HOME Investment Partnerships Program.

Since the inception of the Urban County Program, Hidalgo County has received $241, 778, 860 in CDBG funds and nearly $55.9 million in HOME funds, said Serna. Much of that funding has been for street, park, drainage, water and sewer improvements, installation of lighting, and funding numerous non-profit organizations providing services to low- and moderate-income residents among 18 participating cities and four precincts.

"On a positive note, because of tremendous support, funding will increase in 2018 from a $3 billion budget to a $3.3 billion dollar budget nationwide," said Serna.

The second proclamation celebrates the Fair Housing Act, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act which has been in effect since April 11, 1968 and protects the rights of all Americans to access housing regardless of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, family status or disability.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development continues to enforce the Fair Housing Act, to ensure that every American retains the fundamental right to choose where he or she lives, raises a family, or owns a home.
