WESLACO – Residents looking to pay their taxes or renew their motor vehicle registration will have a faster and more convenient option the next time they visit the Precinct 1 Tax Office substation.
On Wednesday, Nov. 8, Precinct 1 Commissioner David L. Fuentes and Tax Assessor-Collector Paul Villarreal, Jr. hosted a ribbon cutting for the new Tax Office Express Lanes. Fuentes and Villarreal were joined by several county elected officials, local officials and community members.
“Thank you to Valde Guerra for assisting us with finding the funds for this important development,” said Fuentes. “I hope this will be another symbolic way to show how we’re collaborating on many projects to come.”
The new project is an effort to provide more efficient services to county taxpayers. According to Villarreal, in the past year, the Tax Office has processed more than 700,000 transactions. The new express lanes in Precinct 1 will help speed up the process by providing quicker service and less wait times.
“We wanted a better way for our office to expedite the tax payer,” said Villarreal. “We get a lot of people in here; the expansion for this office is much needed.”
The Buildings and Grounds department assisted with the project by providing all the electrical labor for the improvements keeping cost down.
Commissioner Fuentes also announced that monies had been allocated for a new Tax office to be built in the Precinct 1 plaza in the near future.
"We’re going to try and explore a more efficient way of doing things and will hopefully provide tax payers with access to a brand new facility," said Fuentes.
