Weslaco brothers Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa and Omar “Panterita” Figueroa, Jr. were honored at Tuesday’s meeting with a resolution.
The brothers began their boxing careers after graduating from Weslaco East High School. They trained together before their respective fights on July 15 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York.
“We are pleased to have the Figueroa brothers here with their parents. We wanted to recognize them as a family,” said Pct. 1 Commissioner David Fuentes. "These two young men have accomplished a lot professionally-and have made Weslaco, and the county proud."
In a matchup of world champions, Omar Figueroa, triumphantly returned to boxing on July 15 in a nationally televised welterweight main event with a third-round knockout of Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero.
Fighting for the first time in 19 months, the WBC champion's aggressive style and powerful punches have made him one of boxing’s most exciting fighters. He scored five knockdowns on his way to earning the TKO, which was televised on FOX Sports.
Following Omar’s win, Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa kicked off the supplementary card on FOX Sports 1 with an 8-round unanimous decision against Fatiou Fassinou.
“It’s a dream of ours to help and inspire people. I am happy to be able to use my talents to help others,” said Omar. “Thank you for recognizing our efforts, and having us here. We appreciate all the support the county has given us.”
The fighters are champions in and out of the ring, taking time to give back to their community and using their fame to raise awareness for different causes and people.
Both brothers sported shirts honoring the seven sailors who perished on the USS Fitzgerald, and especially Noe Hernandez, continuing Omar's pre-fight tradition of honoring a person or cause. Omar said it was a privilege to pay tribute to the sailors and all military men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our county.
