On Tuesday, May 23, Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo "Eddie" Cantu and his staff hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Regional Linear Park, also known as the Precinct 2 Hike and Bike Trail.
The Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Hike & Bike Trail will provide enhanced connectivity for pedestrian traffic between the cities of San Juan, Pharr and McAllen. The trail will begin on South San Antonio Road in San Juan and ends at the intersection of Second Street and Trenton Road in McAllen.
Commissioner Cantu's vision for this project is to provide regional connectivity to the existing trail system and provide future linkage from the City of San Juan through Pharr, McAllen and eventually to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg, Texas. This project will serve as a major stepping stone by providing a safer environment for pedestrian traffic, a mode of transportation for students and professionals, promote a healthy lifestyle, and will spur economic development and tourism for Hidalgo County.
The Precinct 2 Hike & Bike Project will be fully funded by state and federal funds as well as local municipal contributions totaling $6.76 Million dollars.
The Pct. 2 Hike & Bike project will include:
• Proposed 7.7 mile long asphalt concrete pavement trail
• Standard 8-10ft width for safe two-way pedestrian and bicyclist traffic
• Pedestrian Tunnel Crossings at major roadways for safety
• Safety Features: lighting, signage, emergency call stations
• Exercise stations along trail, benches, shade canopies and water stations
