Hidalgo County has joined the Texas Enterprise Zone Program (TEZP) to help create thousands of jobs in the Rio Grande Valley. TEZP is an economic development tool for local communities to partner with the State of Texas to promote job creation and significant private investment. The program specializes in economically distressed areas in the state.

Columbia Rio Grande Healthcare, L.P. was nominated by Hidalgo County for enterprise project status and meets the criteria for tax relief and other incentives adopted by the county.

Commissioners Court designated Hidalgo County Director of Economic Development Michael Leo as the County’s liaison to communicate and negotiate with the Office of the Governor Economic Development and Tourism through the Bank and Enterprise Projects and to oversee enterprise zone activities and communications with qualified business and other entities.

"Approved projects are eligible to apply for state sales and tax refunds on qualified expenditures," said Leo.

Charles Mallon, Columbia Rio Grande Healthcare Chief Financial Officer, explained how his company will expand their emergency services by creating two locations in Alamo and Edinburg.

"We will create 95 jobs," said Mallon. "It will be an over $22.6 million investment on behalf of the hospital."
