Walk Across Texas is a yearly event which encourages people to get into healthy habits, starting with the simple act of walking daily. This initiative is brought to the county by the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension.
Teams of eight track their miles using different website links and applications. This way of monitoring daily progress is user friendly and very simple, making it easy and free to all participants.
This year, there were 26 participating teams from different county departments walking a total of 33,850 miles combined. The winning team was "Office Pace," in the County Clerk's Office, logging in a whopping 3,433.57 miles.
"This team came together because we all wanted to participate in the initiative of the Hidalgo Fit and Health Department because we liked the opportunity it gave us to get healthier," said Team Captain Danny Gonzalez.
"We set a minimum of five miles a day and we're happy to say that we exceeded that exponentially," Gonzalez said.
