All state and national flags at Hidalgo County offices will be lowered to half-staff and county offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day, Monday, May 30.

Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday in May, is a day of remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of our country, particularly those who died in a war or conflict or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.

“Each year, Memorial Day serves as an opportunity to pay our respects to our fallen heroes,” said Hidalgo County Judge Ramon Garcia. “As we pay our respects, let us also pray for the safe return of all the men and women currently serving on foreign land.”

Since World War 1, Hidalgo County has lost 325 of our sons and daughters to battlefields in foreign lands.

Judge Garcia asks the citizens of Hidalgo County to practice the proper sequence for displaying the flag on Memorial Day. In the morning, the U.S. and State of Texas flags should be attached to the halyard and raised briskly to the top of the flag pole, then slowly lowered to the mid-way point of the pole to be flown at half-staff until noon. At noon, both the U.S. and State of Texas flags should be raised briskly to full-staff for the remainder of the day.
