Commissioners Court honored the spirit and achievements of the Robert Vela Sabercats Varsity Basketball Team with a resolution, presented by Precinct 4 Commissioner Joseph Palacios.

Chief of Staff Jessie Ozuna introduced the agenda item with high praise for the team.

“These boys did the Valley proud, not just the city of Edinburg but the entire Valley. Hitting a monumental distance in the UIL, qualifying for the boys’ basketball region 4 champs and then going to the final 4," Ozuna said. "They’re resilient, and they’re fast, and they never lost focus.”

Precinct 4 staff member Lizbeth Gonzalez read the resolution as each team member received a copy of the resolution during the meeting.

Principal Sylvia Ledesma and Head Coach Lalo Rios joined the team at the meeting.

“Not only have they done very well in basketball but these young men are very intelligent," said Ledesma. "They do very well in academics and they are also very respectful."

The team reached the UIL State Semifinals after winning 17 consecutive games in the 5A Division. The team ended the season with 35 wins.

“This team has the potential to be one of the greatest to ever come out of the Rio Grande Valley and more importantly of Edinburg so my hats off to them,” said Rios.

Semifinal competition marked a historical achievement for the four-year-old school as the Sabercats won District Champions, Bi-district Champions, Area Champions, Regional Quarterfinal Champions, Region 4 Champions, and finished the season as Division 5A Region IV State Semifinalists.

The team is comprised of Seniors Guard Jacob Morin (#1), Forward Alex Cisneros (#5), Guard Hector Ruiz (#12), Forward Jesse Salas (#13), Guard John Paul Rodriguez (#22), Forward Michael Garcia (#23), Forward Robert Arevalo (#25), Center Luis Salinas (#32); Juniors Guard Carlos Azubell (#4), Point Guard Ryan Garza (#10), Point Guard Chris Ochoa (#11), Guard Alec de la Cruz (#21), Guard Enrique Arredondo (#24); Sophomores Guard Trey Chavana (#3), Center Vincent Olivarez (#33); and Freshman Center Noah Sekinger (#2.)

In addition to Rios, the team is led by Assistant Coaches Nick Lopez, Josue Sanchez, Patrick Shelby, Adan Moraida, and Vito Chavana; Managers Sam Eureste, Joe Solis, and Noah Chavana; Trainers Jaime Tovar and Megan Nacke; Athletic Coordinator Michael Salinas; and Athletic Director Rogelio Garza.
