Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Chief Administrative Officer Eduardo “Eddie” Olivarez and Cameron County Health Administrator Esmeralda Guajardo announced that there are no confirmed cases of the Zika virus in their respective counties.
The announcement came after a local news station erroneously reported that there are “multiple cases of the Zika virus in the Rio Grande Valley.” The station later updated the story with a list of Texas counties with Zika virus. Neither Cameron nor Hidalgo counties are on the list.
“I can tell you that as of 1 p.m. today there are no confirmed Zika virus cases in the valley,” Olivarez said.
Hidalgo and Cameron county health officials continue to monitor all mosquito-borne infectious diseases and will alert the public with any necessary updates.
