The court recognized Precinct 2 Constable Martin Cantu for his role in helping save the life of a man who was attempting to jump off of the Queen Isabella Causeway in Port Isabel this past August.
At about 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning, Cantu was heading to the island in his personal vehicle. In the opposite lane (heading away from the island) he saw a South Padre Island police officer leaning over the guardrail struggling to hold on to something. Cantu stopped to assist the officer. Together, the two law enforcement officers, succeeded in pulling the man to safety.
"My instincts kicked in and I jumped in to help the police officer struggling with the individual who did not want to be saved," said Cantu. "We each grabbed one side of the individual and pulled him over the causeway rail."
Cantu is a strong supporter of Suicide Prevention Awareness and was thankful he was able to prevent the individual from committing the act.
Commissioners Court recognizes Constable Martin Cantu for his outstanding and invaluable service to the community of Hidalgo and Cameron counties.
