In an ongoing effort to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle, the court approved a resolution in Support of the second annual McAllen Kids Marathon.

This health event will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the McAllen Sports Complex with a 1 mile run/walk event. During the course of 11 weeks Hidalgo County children will log their miles by running or walking in PE class or at home. The children will come together once again on Saturday, December 12 to run the final mile together and receive participation medals. The goal is for the children to log 26.2 miles, the length of a marathon.

Last year 5,500 children and families attended the kickoff and about 500 children completed the marathon to receive medals.

The court encourages all children to participate in the marathon, the benefits of regular exercise include: improved cardiovascular fitness, maintaining a healthy weight, improved posture, better sleep, increased self-esteem and confidence, improved concentration, stronger bones and muscles, increased flexibility, and opportunities to make friends and enhance social skills.

Sandra Sanchez, Opinion Editor of the Monitor accepted the resolution on behalf of the organizing committee and sponsors and thanked the court for its support.
