Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo “Eddie” Cantu presented a proclamation declaring Thursday, Sept. 10 as Suicide Prevention Awareness Day in Hidalgo County and encourages all residents to take part in the first-ever Suicide Awareness Day vigil from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hidalgo County Courthouse courtyard.
Yolanda Estrada-Peralez, an Accounts Payable Specialist in the Hidalgo County Auditor’s Office, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Say Yes to Life Foundation, the Out of the Darkness organization, and the National Suicide Prevention Awareness Day committee. Estrada-Peralez lost her son Andrew to suicide at age 17. Andrew took his own life in December 2013, when he was a junior at PSJA high school.
"This means a lot to me," said Estrada-Peralez. "This is not only in his memory, but also in memory of all who suffered depression and have lost their lives as a result to suicide."Each May, the Say Yes to Life Foundation holds an event in memory of Andrew and other suicide victims. Estrada-Peralez thanked Commissioner Cantu for bringing the proclamation to the Court and helping to raise awareness of suicide, especially among teens and young adults.
A video presentation showed the faces of some of the lives lost to suicide in Hidalgo County including: Andrew Peralez, Tim Ardis, Jeremy Isaiah Sandoval, Cody Hooks, Miguel Hinojosa, and Jared Garza. See the presentation on our YouTube channel.
Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, but for people aged 15 to 24, it jumps to third leading cause of death.
If you have lost a loved one to suicide, please send his or her name to Vivian Tamez at [email protected]. Their names will be read at the Suicide Awareness Day vigil on September 10.
