Under the office of Precinct 1 Commissioners A.C. Cuellar Jr. a resolution was presented in honor of Carolina E. Montoya, who will celebrate her 105th birthday in July.

Surrounded by more than 25 family members, Mrs. Montoya was given several standing ovations during her recognition for her life, residency and civic service.

Mrs. Montoya was born on July 10, 1910 to parents Doroteo and Juanita Mendoza Espinoza in Agua Dulce, Texas in Nueces County; as one of seven children. At the age of six, her family moved from Auga Dulce to McAllen, Texas, where she attended school in the McAllen Independent School District.

In 1931, she married Nicodemus H. Montoya and settled in Mila Doce in Mercedes, Texas. They were the first pioneers in this area of Mercedes and together they had 10 children, five boys and five girls. Mrs. Montoya dedicated her life to care for her ten children. In addition to being a housewife, Mrs. Montoya helped her husband milk cows, and raise chickens and hogs. In 1965, Mrs. Montoya took over the Espinoza family gas station that was established in the 1950s in Mila Doce, selling gas, ice cream, candy, and sodas.

Mrs. Montoya enjoys visiting with her more than 65 grandchildren, great, great-great, and even great-great-great grandchildren. She also enjoys gardening and crocheting, and loves making tamales for Christmas and other family gatherings.

She has witnessed two World Wars, the Great Depression, 18 United States Presidents and has voted in every local, state and federal election from voting age to present day.

The court honors Carolina E. Montoya for being a good citizen, practicing civic-minded activities and recognizes her continued legacy of a life well-lived as she celebrates her 105th birthday.
