Celebrated in April each year, National Donate Life Month encourages people to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and celebrates those who have saved lives through the gift of donation. There are over 123,000 people on the national transplant waiting list, including 11,676 Texans. Of the number of Texans, 44.4 percent are Hispanic and 23.4 percent are African American.
Volunteer Bobby Reyes-Coronado spoke on behalf of the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance organization. Coronado explained how she joined the organization to help spread the message of organ donation after a motorcycle accident claimed the life of her husband, Emilio "Jimmy" Coronado, on June 25, 2013. Her husbands decision to be a donor saved the lives of dozens of people.
"As of today, since he was an organs and tissue donor, he has helped over 73 lives," said Reyes-Coronado. "If just one person can help that many, [imagine] what it would be everyone registered and became a donor."
Hidalgo County encourages residents to register and become organ and tissue donors and supports outreach and education efforts to recruit even more donors. The court calls upon health care professionals, volunteers, educators, government agencies, faith-based and community groups, and private organizations to join forces to boost the number of organ, tissue, blood and stem cell donors throughout the State of Texas and Hidalgo County.
