Surrounded by her parents and her coaches, Ashley M. Tapia, a Sophomore at PSJA Early College High School, was honored by the court for being crowned the Class 5A State Champion in her weight class during the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Competition in Corpus Christi on March 20, 2015.

Ms. Tapia swept the 220 lb. class by lifting a total weight of 910 lbs., squatting 375 lbs., benching 165 lbs. and dead lifting 370 lbs. This is not the first time Ashley has achieved success in a sport, last year she was crowned the district champion for the PSJA ECHS Varsity Tennis team.

Regular physical activity in adolescence improves strength and endurance, increases self-esteem and helps academic performance, which Ashley has exemplified throughout her high school career.

Ashley was joined at the podium by her parents, Heriberto and Judy Ann Tapia; and coaches, Steve Marroquin, Athletic Coordinator; Omar Gonzalez, Head Power Lifting Coach; and Lisa Cantu, Assistant Power Lifting Coach.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Eddie Cantu congratulated Ashley on behalf of the court.

"We are all very proud of you because we know to be a state champion, you have to be a state champion everyday," said Commissioner Cantu.

The court applauds Ashley's achievement in the sport of power lifting and wishes her continued success in the future.
