On Monday, March 2, 2015 Precinct 1 Commissioner A.C. Cuellar Jr. participated in a “Read Across America” celebration held at Runn Elementary School in Donna. The annual reading motivation and awareness program was created by the National Education Association and calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.
Commissioner Cuellar recited the Reader’s Oath - read to inspire lifelong readers - to the students of Runn Elementary and encouraged them to read all year long.
“Literacy is the gateway to all other learning,” said Commissioner Cuellar. “It is the most basic building block of opportunity in an economy increasingly built on knowledge and innovation.”
Local businesses, including HEB and Dollar General, also participated in the celebration and read the Green Eggs and Ham story book from author Dr. Seuss to the students. At the celebration, Dollar General awarded the elementary school a literacy grant of $4,000 and HEB donated 600 books for the students reading enjoyment.
