Parents and children preparing for the 2014 school year took advantage of the South Alamo Community Resource Center Back to School Fair held Friday, August 18, 2014. Over 300 residents attended the annual fair where local agencies and businesses partnered with the South Alamo Community Resource Center and provided back to school supplies to children who are about to start school.
Representatives from the Hidalgo County Health and Human Services Department, Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office, WIC Department, South Texas Literacy Coalition, and Magic Valley Electric Cooperative set up booths to inform residents of the their services and passed out various types of school supplies including tote bags, folders, notebooks and pencils. The Rio Grande Empowerment Zone, a Presidential initiative designed to afford communities real opportunities for growth and revitalization, donated $200 to the South Alamo Community Resource Center to assist in the purchase of back to school supplies to also be distributed at the fair. Back to school themed door prizes were raffled off to the participating residents and refreshments were given.
Melida Ochoa, Director/Coordinator, was happy about this year's attendance, adding the fair always draws a big crowd, “Parents bring their children to take part in this fun filled event which creates excitement for children starting the new school year,” she said.
Ochoa hopes to have the same amount of supplies and services at next year's event. "We are already planning for next year," she said. "We have to start now so that we can help all the residents of the area."
