Hidalgo County in collaboration with Texas A&M University Colonias hosted its last Dare to Prepare Fair on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Progreso Community Resource Center. Held throughout the month of June and July at Hidalgo County Community Resource Centers, the fairs educate residents on preparedness awareness and provide critical information and resources in a manner that is convenient to them. The fairs also focus on educating and empowering the community to make informed and responsible preparations for a hurricane or a natural disaster.

Many local agencies and businesses provided emergency preparedness tips for the residents who attended. Hidalgo County Emergency Management encouraged residents to purchase inexpensive flash lights, batteries, and radios, which are important items to have if severe weather were to hit their area. Barry Goldsmith, Meteorologist National Weather Service, explained how the use of a weather radio, (available at any Wal-Mart, HEB, and Academy) can be a useful tool in case of a power outage during severe weather. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office educated residents on the importance of keeping personal documents and medications in a water proof bag ready to take in case of an emergency evacuation.

Hurricane season will end on November 20th and the National Weather Service predicts only six hurricanes this year. Still, Hidalgo County encourages residents to take the necessary steps to be prepared for a hurricane or any natural disaster for it takes only one to wreak havoc
