Hidalgo County Commissioners Court approved a proclamation declaring April 2014 as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month. Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month is a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families. During the month of April and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities and promote prevention across the country.

In 2013, 66,938 child abuse and neglect cases were confirmed in Texas. In that same year, Hidalgo County Child Protective Services had 7,541 child abuse and neglect investigations. Of those cases investigated, a total of 3,098 children were confirmed as victims of child abuse and neglect and the result includes two child fatalities. Hidalgo County Commissioners Court realizes that effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships among agencies, schools, religious organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community.

Representatives from CASA for Children, Diana Almaguer and Denisse Quintanilla, thanked Commissioners Court for their support and expressed the importance of creating child abuse and neglect awareness within the community and consider helping parents raise their children.

Hidalgo County Commissioners Court urges all citizens to work together to help reduce child abuse and neglect significantly in years to come.
