Hidalgo County WIC Office Director Norma Longoria presented a proclamation to Commissioners Court declaring March 2014 as National Nutrition Month. Commissioners Court unanimously approved the proclamation that focuses on how to combine taste and nutrition to create healthy meals that follow dietary guidelines recommendations. Consumer research confirms that taste tops nutrition as the main reason why one food is purchased over another. While social, emotional and health factors also play a role, the foods people enjoy are likely the ones they eat most. National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses its attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. Hidalgo County Commissioners Court encourages all citizens to join the campaign and to become aware about their nutrition and the nutrition of others in the hope of achieving the optimum health for both today and tomorrow.
